As always, we’ve created a Google Map so you can get the lay of the land for both Egg Harbor Wineries on the Atlantic Coast and the shores of Lake Michigan! Great wines await the thirsty taste buds of every seasoned connoisseur.

As a teacher by trade, I’ve alphabetized the wineries in each state on the map, and so it only makes sense to start with the Egg Harbor Wineries in New Jersey first.

Egg Harbor City, New Jersey

If you are a Road Scholar like we are, you’re probably wondering what makes this region of the United States a great place for a thriving local wine scene.  The combination of favorable climate, soil conditions, and a supportive wine culture contributes to Egg Harbor’s potential, but the biggest factir is that the Atlantic Ocean.

The currents of the Atlantic Ocean influences the climate by moderating air temperature extremes. The Gulf Stream is a warm ocean current that flows from the equator along the east coast of the United States bringing warmer than expected waters to this part of the country. This warm water keeps the air warmer and protects the vines from harsh winter conditions creating a more stable growing environment…and delicious wines by the barrel!

You really could spend a whole week hopping from winery to winery and soaking up the region’s dynamic atmosphere, so I’ll get you started with a couple to create a fun-filled day of wine and you can take it from there using our map for inspiration.

Cape May Winery and Vineyard

Wine Brunch

Start the day off right with a memorable summer Sunday brunch experience paired with exquisite glasses of wine. (Brunch is only offered during the summer season) Cape May Winery is an absolute must-visit.  It’s a very pretty winery and restaurant with lots of flowers and plenty of outdoor seating. There is often low key live entertainment to really create a peaceful atmosphere. This winery sits on location at their own vineyard where you can take off your shoes and run through the soft grass with your bare feet!  Cape May Winery also has a gift gallery that sells wine, snacks, and merchandise.

Hit Cape May Beach in between sips of wine

As a side adventure, this winery is only 3-4 miles to Cape May Beach. This beach is a beautiful relaxing spot and we enjoyed looking for “Cape May Diamonds” in the sand. Cape May Diamonds are a natural phenomenon that wash up on the shores in this area. Legend has it that the Cape May Diamonds were originally found by the Kechemeche, a Lenape tribe. The Kechemeche believed the gems contained a supernatural power and could bring about fortune, success and well being.

There is a fine for bringing alcohol on the beach, but you can bring a cooler. Just saying.

Jumping to the Midwest from the Atlantic Coast, you can visit more amazing Egg Harbor wineries on the Door County Wine Trail in Wisconsin! In keeping with your Road Scholar lesson, this region is similar to the Atlantic Coast in terms of the contributing factors that make it a great wine making region. Located on the Door Peninsula, Egg Harbor benefits from a microclimate influenced by Lake Michigan. The lake has a moderating effect on air temperatures, which can help protect grapevines from extreme cold and frost, extending the growing season.

Again, to really soak up the beauty of these Egg Harbor wineries, spend a weekend or a week soaking up Door County’s unique beverage scene  Hop from tasting room to tasting room sipping award-winning wines paired with delicious bites from a tasting menu and you’ll soon find yourself solving all the world’s problems!  Better yet, make a reservation to jump on the Door County Trolley and let your professional driver take you  on a tasting adventure to all the top wineries.
